If you see this icon, it means FAIL happened.

UGH. So I promised myself that I would look for work. And I am! Actively, even. I was scouring these two job-offering sites and I saw a very interesting ad posted in one of them - the company offers the opportunity to either work at the office or from home, and all you need to do is to write several articles on different topics, which will depend on the orders given to you. So I thought, hmm, this looks promising. I clicked on the homepage of the company; at first glance it seemed very legitimate. Everything you're curious about, it's there. They even have this nifty 'APPLY HERE' portion, which only prompted the applicant to fill in a few boxes (compared to e-mailing them a resume - alas, my resume has yet to be updated). I was ecstatic. Working from home and writing? WOW. Oh I'm definitely in!

Then, came dinner. I left the 'apply here' page empty, since I told myself I need to tell my folks that I'm interested in this job, blahblahblah. Plus, I needed a calmer head if I'm to actually apply for the job, since I might make a lot of mistakes because of my excitement.

This is also the part where I asked for a little guidance from above.

Back to the page I go. I was about to fill it up, when I thought, hey - why not research if this site's a HOAX? I mean, last year when I was in the States I also wanted to do writing jobs online but the prevalence of online-writing-scams put me off. I've read a lot from forums where the writers themselves outed several sites for failing to meet payment dates, accusing them of plagiarism and late submission as an excuse to impose penalties, etc. etc.

TL;DR: TURNS OUT, THE VERY SITE I WAS SECONDS AWAY FROM JOINING WAS ONE OF THOSE SCAM SITES.

I was relieved, appalled, and disappointed by this, of course. Ugh. Just another proof that if something seems too good to be true? It usually is :( And it's annoying because my drive to continue looking for a job online took a massive hit. GAH.

IN OTHER LESS DEPRESSING NEWS, anyone got any tips on how to play Darla from ATS Season Two? I was trying to see if I can actually play her a bit decently, but I'm having some trouble since, in my opinion, there's nothing really out of the ordinary when it comes to her dialogues in the show - which leads to my spectacular FAIL at playing her.

It's interesting that you should talk about applying for job fail, because I just sufferent major fail myself just now, seconds ago. All was going well, and I felt great and I even rewrote my cv and answered brilliant stuff on the questions and then, what happens? It won't go through because I have no references. It's automated, so even if I would so totally be brilliant at the job, I can't even apply for it because I've never worked before.

Rude much?

I'm glad you researched it and found it was a scam before you got involved in it. Sorry it was a scam though, 'cause that would otherwise have been totally awesome.

Wait, can't you use a former professor/old family friend as reference? I remember when it was my first time to apply for a job; I think I used my thesis adviser as one of my references.

I don't actually have one, and I don't think family members count. :P But I'll live and will simply look through it another time again or something.

Ohhh I see. And nope, not family members per se; my mom has a bunch of doctor friends so sometimes I use them as my references.

UGH. Job-hunting is a pain :(

Heh. It's totally cool that you can do that.

Yes, yes it is.

The scams make it tough because there ARE some legitimate work@home jobs (I've been in one myself for almost three years.) If you're not opposed to call centre work, try looking into that; a lot of them offer work@home.

[identity profile] zarahjoyce.livejournal.com 2009-09-22 12:55 am (UTC)(link)
They do :( And it's very discouraging to encounter them. Ugh.

Oh! My cousin in the States work for one. In the Philippines usually the call centers have their own offices, but it would be neat if they do offer work at home stuff too!

Try applying at writers.com. Just google it. It's really hard to look for a job nowadays...but you're sure to have one. Just be patient. Be very patient.
