Shinkenger fic: Foiled
Title: Foiled
Rating: PG
Summary and Notes: Somewhat a continuation of Innocence. This idea has been plaguing me for a while but I had to wait for the subs of Act 20 to be sure. Plus, what was up with Kotoha being awake despite her soul being gone? This is something to address that, in my twisted mind XD
Having returned to the Sanzu River, Utakasane lifted his arm and released Kotoha's soul. She took shape immediately, a solid projection of her body, and turned on the Ayakashi.
"Fool!" she accused. "You dare take me when the Shiba head would have been better? If you had eaten his soul, then Doukoku need not fear anyone having enough power to seal him for eternity any longer!"
The music of the shamisen, playing so serenely in the background, was abruptly cut off. Dayu looked up, saw Kotoha giving her little tirade, and chuckled. "Your little spy has returned, Doukoku." She had no affection for the human but found her tolerable and useful, at the very least.
"You were speaking about fear, human?" Doukoku said, rising from his spot and slowly approaching Kotoha. Menace radiated from him - his very presence a silent threat.
But she showed no emotion. "I merely meant that, had this idiot taken Shiba's soul instead of mine - then all our problems would have been solved. He will die, and the clan will no longer be a threat to you."
Utakasane crossed his arms in defiance, but wisely kept silent.
"But this is acceptable as well," Doukoku said. "It had, after all, been too long since you had graced us with your presence. And Utakasane had given the Shinkengers enough grief to flood the rivers. They must be lamenting your loss even as we speak."
Kotoha grinned at that. "Perhaps," she said, amused at the very idea. She had no doubt they were beating their breasts in agony over losing her - Chiaki and Mako, most of all.
Thinking quickly, she studied the Ayakashi until an idea hit her. "Then again, perhaps we can still make use of what foiled opportunity we have."
"Oh?" Doukoku said, inclining his head.
She turned towards one of the windows and studied the waters beneath them. Closing her eyes, she channeled a bit of energy to animate her body again.
Kotoha fluttered her eyelashes and found herself inside one of the rooms. She made tiny, helpless sounds which caught the attention of a kuroko - soon, the Shinkengers were alerted and they rushed towards her bedside.
"Everyone," she muttered, her voice rusty and tear-stricken. Weak. Perfect. "I'm... sorry I wasn't able to fight."
"You shouldn't worry about that!" exclaimed Chiaki.
"We'll do something," promised Mako.
Kotoha glanced at Takeru, before taking a deep, shaky breath. "I'm... glad it was just me." She closed her eyes - and was surprised when she was almost yanked out of her bed.
"Hold on! I will definitely save you!" Takeru vowed. "So, until then--"
"Tono," she muttered, weakly. "I'm fine. I'm fine." Kotoha gave him a small, fragile smile before conveniently losing consciousness.
Which brought her right back to the Sanzu River.
"A touching performance," Dayu said wryly, her fingers slowly dancing on the shamisen once again. "Was that meant for our ears, too?"
"What did you do?" Utakasane demanded.
Kotoha turned to face them. "The Shinkengers will now do anything to save me, and get back my soul," she said, smiling. "Anything. And if they can't draw Utakasane out of the river..."
Dayu chuckled. "Are you saying that they will go in to get your soul themselves?"
"Like I said," Kotoha reiterated, appreciating that Dayu, at least, got her meaning. "It's one of the many, many possibilities, but I'm betting on it the most. They won't let me die, after all. Once they have arrived in this world, then you will have them cornered, Doukoku. They will be good as dead." She lifted her chin and gave the Gedoushu leader an arrogant smirk. "I will have delivered them to you."
Doukoku laughed, a boisterous, rowdy sound. "I like your thinking, child. If what you say happens, then I will promise to give you more than what I have offered you before."
Which, of course, had already been a lot - enough to tempt Kotoha into doing away with her sister and usurping the power entrusted to the older girl.
"I only do what I can to please you, Doukoku." She bowed deeply, before turning to the Ayakashi again. "Take me back. We must be prepared, just in case."
Of course, she hadn't counted on Genta foiling everything from that point on.
