Fic: Weakness
Title: Weakness
Rating: PG-13. Violence!
Summary: "The purpose of this battle is not to end you, but to find your weakness, ShinkenRed."
Notes: This was the other fic I was working on, aside from Control, while I was on my three-day net deprivation. This 'scene' takes place in my ideal Shinkenger world where Takeru is only a decoy for the real royalty, who is, of course, Kotoha.
He lurked in the shadows, watching, reading, memorizing the enemies' moves. The Blue, Pink, and Green warriors foiled their foes without hesitation or remorse, but their techniques did not interest him much. Their colors were but unfocused blurs to his eyes.
His attention was on the Red leader - though he fought with skill and precision his mind was clearly not set on his battle alone. While his enemies were on the ground, having received fatal blows, he would glance at the place where the youngest fought. Though she held her ground admirably - Juzou made sure to send many Nanashis to keep them moving - he noticed that every now and then the leader would purposely draw her foes' attentions to himself, which would lessen the number of those she fought.
He was clearly looking out for this particular vassal, and the reason for this was what Juzou wanted to discover.
He drew out his Uramasa, smiling as he did, and leapt.
Juzou's attacks on the three were unexpected, which was why they were never blocked. They fell, defeated, their weapons useless to them now. Upon seeing this, the Yellow one cried out their names and, ignoring the threat of the foot soldiers, ran towards her friends. The leader yelled her name in alarm and quickly moved to intercept her, but rather than halting her altogether he only cleared her path. Apparently, this Red Shinkenger had not seen Juzou yet, as he was partly hidden amidst the wreckage he had created. And he was allowing the girl to run towards him.
Juzou smiled in anticipation.
He allowed the girl to run past him, then purposely stepped forward, blocking Red's way just as he was about to follow her. The leader paused; though his face was hidden there was no mistaking the shock that ran through him.
"Mako-chan! Ryu-san, Chiaki!" they both heard the Yellow girl scream in alarm. "Please hold on, we'll get some help--"
Juzou's smile widened. "Shinkenger," he spoke, cradling his Uramasa lovingly. "Are those your proud vassals? How easily they have become prey to my sword. One attack was all it took. How unskilled your chosen warriors in this time are." He glanced at the hysterical girl and feigned surprise. "But I seem to have missed one--"
"No!"
There were blurred movements; but just as Juzou had expected the moment he attacked the girl was the same moment Red had launched himself into the air and shielded her body with his own.
"To-tono-sama!" she sobbed, catching Red's body as his suit dissipated, leaving a hurt, spent, fallen lord in its wake. "Tono-sama!"
He opened his eyes, removed her hold on him and croaked, "Run."
She shook her head. "Tono--"
"I... order you, Kotoha!" He coughed pathetically after the last word. "Run!"
"I was right," Juzou said softly, walking towards them.
Yellow, having heard his approach, rushed in front of her lord with her weapon drawn out. She threw it at him, meaning to keep him at bay, but Juzou deflected it easily and soon it landed on the earth where one end jutted out at an odd angle.
She gasped, but didn't back down.
Juzou smirked at her, his steps sure, unhurried, with purpose.
The others began to regain consciousness.
Their lord, struggling to stand, finally managed to do so.
And the first thing he did was to stand between the girl and her enemy.
"Tono..." the blue one said, his battered body weighing him down.
"You will not get your hands on her," their lord hissed. "Not when I'm still alive."
"Tono-sama!" she said, crying and clearly confused. "I--why--"
Juzou chuckled at this useless show of bravery. "You make it so easy," he said. "ShinkenRed. What can you do, in that state, to protect her? You can barely stand. If I grab her from behind you and slit her throat, will there be anything you can do other than snarl at me?"
"Kotoha!" the Pink one shrieked.
"You bastard!" the Green one shouted.
ShinkenRed drew the girl closer to him and said nothing.
"I can see that this will not be a challenge after all," Juzou said, sheating his Uramasa. "I will come back. This battle's aim was not to end you, of course. It is for me to find your weakness, ShinkenRed. And I believe I have found it." He turned away, but said over his shoulder, "I wonder... would you do the same for your other vassals, what you did for her?"
