White Lie, G
This was supposed to be for
toku100 but alas I can't for the life of me write drabbles that short. Heh.
Title: White Lie
Rating: G
Characters: Ryunosuke, Kotoha
Summary: If Kotoha wanted Ryunosuke to calm down, she knew she had to improvise. Post Ep - 2

When Kotoha arrived she saw that Ryunosuke was still standing under the pouring water. His head was bowed and his eyes were closed - a far cry from the proud stance they left him in.
"Ryunosuke?"
He opened his eyes and blinked before slowly reaching for the towel she brought him. When he had one wrapped around his torso, she flung the other towel above his head until it hung like a veil. Kotoha pushed the ends towards him until Ryunosuke had them in a tight grip.
"You brought tea," he said, an occasional shiver marring his tone.
She nodded, poured some in the cup, gave it to him. With shaking fingers he took it, sipped greedily.
"Are you okay?" Kotoha asked.
He paused, the rim of the cup still touching his lips. Then, "He didn't accept my apology."
All the way home Mako and Chiaki had talked about how Ryunosuke managed to make something so simple become so exaggerated to the point of being awful. Maybe Ryunosuke has a need to be praised verbally by his superiors and will go to great lengths to achieve it, Mako had mentioned thoughtfully. Oh yeah, he's definitely a nut - and insane and high and stupid and weird, Chiaki had proclaimed. Kotoha had glanced at their emperor and he, as usual, had not said a word so she didn‘t, too.
His cup was now empty. She lifted the small thermos and offered more tea but he shook his head.
"He didn't accept my apology," Ryunosuke repeated, more to himself.
"Um, I think he did," she told him softly. "I'm... pretty sure he did."
"No," he replied, and Kotoha was struck by how much devastation and anguish he could express in such a small word. "No, he didn't. He would have said so."
He was still shaking when he spoke. She wasn't sure if it was because of the cold or because of his emotions - Ryunosuke's the type to cry over the colors of a rainbow, Chiaki had said. I bet he'll say 'Oh! How pretty!' and then sing about them in a girlishly high tone while crying.
That's not funny, Mako had reprimanded him, but she was grinning. No. I think he's more like... he reminds me of one of my students, actually - so eager to please teachers like his little life depends on it. One praise from me usually gets him to pipe down a bit. If only our emperor can get off his pedestal for just one second and give Ryunosuke some credit - I'm sure that will shut him up.
Having heard these from the other two vassals earlier and looking at Ryunosuke now, Kotoha had no choice but to improvise.
"He's accepted your apology, Ryunosuke," she insisted. When he looked at her she continued, "Why else would he have sent me here?"
His eyes rounded like saucers and he gaped like a fish. "You mean--"
She nodded and smiled.
For several moments, they didn't speak. They didn’t even blink. Then, with trembling fingers Ryunosuke took the thermos from her hands and almost lovingly brought it closer to his face.
And then he cried.

Only now do I realize that writing Ryunosuke is so very hard. Ugh. And I love him, but he's sooo easy to make fun of :P
