Shinkenger fic. The first in the fandom? I HOPE SO.
This was something I was working on last night and earlier today. It was a part of a series of drabbles that would ultimately lead to my theory, so... heh. Characterization is surely off because REALLY. I MEAN, THE SHOW WOULD ONLY BE PREMIERING LIKE, TOMORROW.
Slight Red/Pink and Blue/Yellow alert!
--- WRITTEN BEFORE SERIES PREMIERE ---
The world was swept from underneath them all: one second they had the ground to steady them, then the next brought chaos and flying feet and frantic hands.
They each managed to save their skins, but only slightly so.
Mako winced as she felt the root she clung to bury bits of itself into her palm. She spared a glance around her, saw everyone in a similar plight - though of course Takeru, being Takeru, had already pulled himself up. He was closest to her; helping her would be the most logical thing to do. Despite the numerous times they've argued, despite her questioning his abilities as their leader, she knew she would be helped by him no matter what--
"Kotoha!" he yelled instead, bending to lend a hand to the youngest member of their group. "Grab my hand!"
Oh yes, he did look at Mako as he passed by her, but barely slowed his steps in his haste to help Kotoha. The young girl raised her eyes to him, blinked, and said, "Thank you, Takeru-sama," before being abruptly saved.
Only when he was certain she was on solid ground did Takeru come back to Mako.
"My turn, then?" It was understandable, the hard edge in her tone. Perhaps it was also understandable that Takeru behaved like this since Kotoha, unlike Mako, never did question his skills and instead obediently, blindly followed him and because Kotoha, unlike Mako, never talked to their feudal lord like he was one of her more errant, bratty students and instead treated him with utmost respect.
It made sense that he would save his faithful servant before the more annoying one.
It made sense and she hated him for it.
"Sorry," he mumbled, grabbing her and pulling her up without difficulty. He held her hand seconds too long, all the while not meeting Mako's eyes and she preferred it that way. If he dared to even look at her she would--
"Ryunosuke!" Kotoha called, tone very nearly piercing. She knelt and extended her hand downwards while keeping the other anchored on the ground, teetering precariously close to the edge as she did so. Bits of sharp rock dug into her exposed skin. "Come on!"
"I'm too heavy for you!" shouted Ryunosuke. Instead he tried to save himself, only to end up inches closer to the chasm beneath him.
The ground underneath Kotoha's hand suddenly gave way, and her body threatened to pitch forward. Mako shrieked in alarm.
"Kotoha!" Takeru yelled, moving towards her again.
But Chiaki had already beaten him to it; it was the other vassal who came to Kotoha and Ryunosuke's aid. He bodily pulled the girl up and away from the edge, then laid on the ground. "Don't be such a moron, Ryunosuke. You're only going to make Koto-chan cry again." And with that, he managed to reach down, grab Ryunosuke's hand and haul the last samurai up to safety.
"Are you all right?" Kotoha asked breathlessly as soon as he was beside her. She spotted a nasty gash on one of Ryunosuke's palms and hastily tore a part of her sweater, using it to dress the wound.
Given the time Mako knew Ryunosuke, it surprised her to realize that this would be the first time she saw him look this flabbergasted and dumbfounded. And with Koto-chan, of all people! Mako managed a small, fond smile.
"Well," declared Takeru, hands on hips. "That was close."
Chiaki favored him with a roll of his eyes.
"Such wit," Mako muttered with disdain, her smile dying a swift death.

Is 'Koto-chan' even a favorable nickname for Kotoha? I hope so. And I really think Mako and Chiaki would not be calling Takeru 'Takeru-sama', what with their apparent dislike of him and all. I'm really, really looking forward to this year's team dynamics :D
