Fic prompt - Envy

So it seems I only needed a few days of not looking at the fic I wrote to actually appreciate its ending :D

Header: Envy
Title: In Public
Author: zarahjoyce
Character/Pairing/Group: Draco/Hermione
Word Count: 796
Rating: G
Summary: Draco entertaining his fangirls? There’s only so much Hermione could take!
Disclaimer: All characters belong to J.K. Rowling
Warning(s): None
Author’s Notes: All right, so this is much more Jealousy than Envy, I know. I have no excuse :D Well. Maybe the fangirls will be envious of Hermione afterwards?

Hermione never knew that hearing someone’s laughter could actually make her blood pressure rise and enable her to think of bad, bad thoughts like murder and mayhem - thoughts that were, usually, reserved to Slytherins alone.

“Oh Draco, I just loved seeing your broom! Thank you so much for showing it to me—“

Her quill almost broke as she gripped it; her parchment almost got punctured as she wrote so heavily upon it. Every now and then she would look up, frown severely, and emit guttural sounds.

Someone on her table finally took notice. “Anything wrong, Hermione?” Harry asked gently, patting her shoulder.

“Can’t you see, Harry? She’s in one of her moods again,” whispered Ginny.

Hermione glanced at her. “I can hear you perfectly well, Ginny Weasley,” she practically hissed.

The younger Gryffindor cocked a brow, then rolled her eyes. “Sor-ry,” she muttered, going back to her notes.

“Mind your own business, would you?” her brother snapped at her. Turning on Hermione, Ron offered a smile. “But, seriously Hermione, is there something bothering you?” he asked, edging closer to her. “Because if there’s anything—“

The laughter she heard became louder, accompanied even by several feminine, squeaky giggles.

“—anything at all—“

“Oh Draco, you’re just so evilly charming!”

“—you can tell me,” Ron sweetly offered.

“You haven’t seen anything yet, luv. Wait until I show you my--”

That’s it! “I have to go.” Shaking her head, she gathered all her things in a rush and stalked out of the Great Hall.

Yes, she definitely was in one of her moods again. All she needed now was for someone to say one wrong thing to her and she could definitely murder that unfortunate creature.

How dare he! How dare he be so… evilly charming in public! And to entertain his fangirls! In public!

She was too busy being mad that she failed to recognize the steady sound of footsteps following her everywhere. When she did, the hairs on her nape stood up, the way they always did when she became aware of him. Hermione frowned; he wanted a scene, didn’t he? Well. She’d give him one.

“Why the hell are you following me Malfoy?”

The said person blinked, and then gave a smile too large to be sincere. It seemed that he was caught unawares of her intention; after all normally she wouldn’t be caught dead talking to him in public. “Whoever said I was, Granger? I happened to be going the same way you were. You must have a high opinion of yourself, thinking everyone’s actually following you.”

Sniggers reached her ears and she turned her eyes to a group of fifth-year students busily gawking at her and Malfoy. “Well? What are you looking at? Get going!” she snapped at them. “No entertainment here, you know!”

Malfoy just shook his head. “You shrieking around like a wild banshee was the entertainment.” He stepped closer to her, then whispered, “Whatever’s got you flaming mad?”

She glared at him. “As if you didn’t know!”

He frowned. “Know—“

“Draco, there you are!”

A horde of girls rushed in to where they were. They gave Hermione the evil eye, then smiled angelically at Malfoy. “Why did you leave so suddenly? You were in the middle of telling us an incredible story—“

“—yes, about that mousy bookworm that keeps on following you around—“

Hermione raised a brow.

Malfoy shot a look at her, and had the grace to look embarrassed. “Oh. About that. Well—“

Mousy bookworm?” Hermione intoned, tapping her foot. “Mousy?

“Don’t you have some books to eat, Granger?” one bold Slytherin fangirl told her, while Malfoy visibly tried to come up with something to pacify her.

That was it. Hermione pursed her lips, marched up to Malfoy, and kissed him.

In public.

She forgave the one moment he wasn’t able to respond; after all she did surprise him. But she was able to appreciate that he didn’t let her have the upper hand for long.

When they finished, they were both grinning, and the fangirls were stunned to dead silence.

Malfoy cocked a brow at her. “Why the sudden show of affection, luv? Can’t resist me, after all?”

Jaws dropped lower to the floor.

“What?”

“Granger’s—“

“Draco’s—“

Hermione rolled her eyes. “Just wanted to give them something to be envious of.”

“Us? Whatcha—“

“Does this mean—“

“!!!!”

“I knew it.” He took out his wand, winked at her, then turned to the shocked fangirls. “Shame they won’t remember it.”

“Yes,” she said, taking out hers as well. “Such a shame.”

Sooner or later, Hermione knew they’d have to come up with a legitimate excuse so that the next time they snogged in public, they wouldn’t have to obliviate the hell out of anyone who witnessed it.

It started out funny, but I think with the ending - and the obliviating - it turned kind of, I don't know. Evil. Still good mind you, and entertaining. But evil. :P

I know! *grin* Which was why I was reluctant to post this before - the ending struck me as kind of unrelated to the events before. But! This is one of those things that made me go "well why not" and posted it :D

Thank you!

Bwahahahaha! Zarah, you evil girl. :) So sly and Slytherinny of both Draco and Hermione. :D :D

We loved it! (as usual. Guh, we're getting tired of saying that about your fics. It's all we ever say, we feel rather uncreative)

Hehe. But anyway- well, we figured it was coming (not the Obliviate, but the kiss). :D :D Made us grin sooo wide, hehe.

After not being on the computer so much these days (what with recent events, we haven't read many fics), it's so nice to read D/Hr again, and one of YOURS at that. :D

Thanks! I'm very glad you enjoyed it :D
