“I’m not satisfied with your work.”
Granger straightened her back, quill almost dropping in shock. “Excuse me?”
Draco glanced at her, arched a brow, then slammed the parchment a few inches away from her hand. “You’re getting quite sloppy, Granger. And here I thought getting you as a partner will be an advantage to me, when all the while you’re just trying to sabotage our project.”
He watched, with no small amount of satisfaction, as her cheeks colored. She grabbed the parchment, and he could sense her desire to slap it to his face. “This is a product of an overnight’s worth of research, you bastard! The only way you wouldn’t be able to understand any of it is if you didn’t do any of your work and--”
Cocking his head to one side, Draco offered her a smirk. “I wouldn’t really put the blame on me, you know, seeing as I have managed to produce top-quality work. You, on the other hand…”
Her chair made several scratching sounds as it was pushed back in her haste to stand. “How dare you! For your information, I was able to document my sources for every fact I’ve listed there, and—“
“Care to show me these sources of yours?” Draco smiled at her, stepped even closer. “So that I could… you know. Double-check.”
It was probably the wrong thing to say, as the next thing he knew, the parchment had been slapped to his face. “Fine. Fine, you bastard. I will bring all my books here and you do your blasted double-checking!”
Chuckling, Draco watched her storm off. He picked up the paper, looked through each item, and grinned. Of course everything in here was correct. He was just trying to see if she would rise to his baiting, that’s all.
And Granger never failed to rise beautifully against him.
Truth be told, Draco’s primary intention of doing this was to prolong their spending time together. And he would burn in hell before Granger found out that that was his reason. Scratch that; it wouldn’t really matter if she found out, because she wouldn’t believe it. She would probably think that this was his sadistic nature coming up to the surface, that this was him trying to see which of them could survive the longest without trying to murder the other.
Which, of course, was partly true as well.
He schooled his features and adopted a bored look when she returned. He noted the large tomes she carried with her and did not bother to suggest his help; it would just be a waste of time, anyway.
“Here,” she said, dropping the tomes on his lap.
On his lap!
“What the—“ Draco stood, almost jumping back to avoid the books falling to his feet. Enraged, he looked at her satisfied face. “Are you trying to keep me from having children of my own?”
“Well. You’re the one who wanted to… you know. Double-check.” Smiling, even chuckling a bit, she returned to her own table.
Damn and blast.
He tried not to wince as a part of his anatomy positively throbbed when he sat.
Well.
If this was the effect of his greed… then Draco would have to bear it like any man should.
