KRF Fic: Possibilities (1/2)
Rating: G
Summary: "You're a good boy. Tomoko is certainly lucky to have you as a friend."
Notes: A what-if scenario that leads to the Fourze x Wizard movie spoilers. Set from present-ish to five years into the future. Also included is jadedkrystal's prompt about Ryusei meeting Tomoko's mom... sorry if it took me so long to write this down!
Ryusei had not thought of going to Amanogawa so soon after he'd left, but upon hearing the news he didn't think twice about stepping foot on it again. Of course, this was far from being a pleasant, friendly visit.
"--what do you mean," he said quietly, after dragging Gentarou away from the others, "that Tomoko-chan and JK are missing?"
Gentarou appeared ill at ease as he shifted one foot after the other, and scratched the back of his head. Ryusei was about to repeat his question with marked impatience when Gentarou finally spoke, "It's already been a week since anybody saw either of them," he replied slowly, quietly. "Ohsugi-sensei was the last one. He said he saw them walking out of the school together, and he figured JK was walking Tomoko home. But then they--they never showed up to class the next day, and no one saw them ever since. Tomoko's mother--"
All his explanations fell to deaf ears as soon as Ryusei realized their implications. "A week?" Ryusei grabbed Gentarou by the collar, forced him closer. "Tomoko-chan's been missing for a week and you didn't bother telling me earlier?"
"I--"
"Sakuta."
Ryusei reluctantly lifted his eyes off Gentarou to see Kengo approaching them. Without preamble, Kengo placed his hand on Ryusei's and forced it off Gentarou's person. "This isn't Kisaragi's fault. I was the one who told him and the others not to bother telling you, not until we've tried everything on our end. Kisaragi hasn't stopped from searching for both Nozama and JK since we noticed they were missing and--"
"I don't care!" The words exploded from Ryusei's mouth, as he found another person to face and, ultimately, blame. "You should have told me about it the moment you noticed she was gone. Don't you think I would have wanted to help in finding her? That we could have found her sooner if I was around?" Realizing that he was wasting time being here when he could do something else, Ryusei turned abruptly, began reaching for his Meteor driver and switch.
"Where are you going?" It was Kengo's voice that called out to him. "Don't you think Kisaragi has already been around every possible place they could have gone to?"
Ryusei turned. Why did he even have to explain this, anyway? Wasn't it obvious enough? "There must be somewhere he didn't look. He can't have-- he must've missed something!" He's Gentarou, after all. The thought was uncharitable and unkind, but right now Ryusei didn't care. He looked at Gentarou and told him, "Why are you here, anyway? Shouldn't you still be looking for her?" Them, he thought belatedly, but didn't bother correcting himself. After all, chances were if - when - they find Tomoko, they'd find JK as well.
Kengo looked about ready to argue something in return when Gentarou placed a hand on his shoulder and shook his head. He then strode towards Ryusei, hand already holding the Fourze driver. "Let's go, Ryusei."
-
Tomoko's wide, startled eyes stared up at him, obviously surprised that someone bothered to take her picture when she was merely fiddling with her Ipad during lunch break. Beside her, JK was grinning unabashedly, as he was caught about to do his signature dance move. Both his arms were raised as he prepared to dive into the dance floor.
Ryusei pursed his lips, then ripped the pictures of the two off the bulletin board. The wind had already tore pieces of them away, rendered the contact details unreadable, while the rain had already made the ink run and their images blurred and unrecognizable. Should anyone see either of the two in person, they wouldn't be able to know based from these notices that Tomoko and JK were missing for quite some time now - six months to be exact.
He hadn't stopped looking. Gentarou hadn't, as well. They, along with the rest of the club, were doing everything in their power to try and find their missing friends and yet--
Tomoko-chan, where are you? He fished out a new missing person notice of hers and stared at it for a few seconds. Wait for me. I'm going to find you. Quietly, he placed it on a prominent spot in the bulletin board, where everyone can see it. Next he took out JK's and posted it beside Tomoko's. JK. Wherever you are, I hope you're together. I hope you're protecting her.
Wait for me.

When Ryusei arrived at Tomoko's house, he found that there was a large moving truck parked outside of it. Confused, he immediately sought Tomoko's mother and found her inside Tomoko's room, quietly removing the witch cutouts from the wall and putting them into a box. Ryusei moved forward and accidentally stepped on and shattered one of the small bottles littering the floor, and the noise caused the woman to turn around. "Oh, Ryusei," she said, flustered. "What are you doing here?"
He shoved his hands in his pockets. "I'm sorry, Nozama-san. I was about to knock, but-- you seem preoccupied." Ryusei glanced about the room. "--where are you going?"
It was Gentarou who suggested that Ryusei should go visit Tomoko's mother. He had initially refused, saying that he preferred having her daughter with him safe and sound before even thinking of showing himself. But, as time went by it was becoming a bit clearer that his idea of introducing himself to Tomoko's parents was getting harder and harder to achieve. It was on the ninth month that Ryusei found the courage to do what Gentarou had initially wanted him to do.
"Ah. So you're Ryusei?" Her eyes crinkled at the corners as she smiled at him, no matter how much the expression was ladened with sorrow. "Tomoko has told me so much about you. Come in."
Three months after that first meeting, and Tomoko's mother seemed to have aged impossibly and continuously in such a short time.
She still smiled at him now, despite him disappointing her time and again. "Tomoko's father has decided it was time for us to leave this place." Her voice shook, as she looked down at one of the witches she had taken down from the wall. "He said-- he said this place held too much bad memories and it would only remind us of... of what we've lost."
Ryusei stepped closer to her. "You can't leave, Nozama-san!" He forced himself to lower his voice, not wanting to distress her further. "What if-- what if Tomoko-chan comes back? What if she comes back here and finds out that this is no longer her house? Where would she go then?" Ryusei took another step. Couldn't she see that she was making a huge mistake? "What if I find her? I will. I promised you, didn't I? I haven't stopped looking, Nozama-san. I--"
But she placed a hand on his arm and shook her head. "It's been a year, Ryusei," she said quietly. "And I know you haven't stopped looking, and I appreciate it. Tomoko's father does, too. More than you'll ever know." She took a deep breath and patted his cheek gently. "You're a good boy. Tomoko is certainly lucky to have you as a friend."
But our decision is final. He could hear the unspoken words loudly, and suddenly he felt angry at them because how dare they decide like this, how dare they abandon their daughter like this, as if Tomoko didn't matter to them at all, like she--
"--here." She handed him a note. "It's our new address. Should anything happen-- should you find her--" Tomoko's mother was looking at him with those eyes, and it was clear now from whom Tomoko got them from. And there was a twisting in his gut because he hadn't yet fulfilled his promise; he hadn't found her yet and there must be something else he could do and he'd do it because not finding Tomoko was unthinkable. It wasn't an option.
"I'll bring her home." He spoke his promise quietly as he pocketed the note. "You have my word."
